![Industry Insights — Why Would China Flood Global Markets with Steel?
China's steel exports are surging, with experts predicting a record-high total of over 110 million tons by the end of 2024—its highest since 2015. In the first half of the year, exports hit 53 million tons, a 24% jump from 2023.
Why?
China's domestic demand for steel is falling. Despite producing over half the world's steel (1.89 billion tons), local consumption is expected to drop below 900 million tons in 2024.
The real estate downturn and consequent slower infrastructure growth are key factors. With excess production and shrinking profit margins, Chinese steelmakers are turning to global markets, creating price wars difficult for international players to compete against.
This dumping of steel is likely to continue as China’s economic challenges persist.
